As a beekeeper you will be subjected to bee stings. They will decrease in time, as you become more adept at the handling of bees. If you should be stung, you will need to know what to do. When a bee stings you the stinger will remain behind because of the barbs on the stinger. DO NOT pull the stinger out this only release more of the bee venom into the sting site. Scrap the stinger out. Use a fingernail or even the hive tool to remove the stinger.

The stinger contains glands that secrete chemicals that is an alarm odor. Because of this, if you are still around the hives, other bees will either sting the same area or buzz around it. Puff some smoke on the sting area and remove yourself away from the hives. Wash the site with water to remove the chemical causing the odor. Washing isn’t usually necessary because by scraping the stinger away and removing it the alarm chemicals go with it.

You may want to use a sting relief medication on the site, as it will hurt for a while. Otherwise a cool compress will provide some relief. There are some home remedies you can use that will help alleviate the discomfort.

You can apply a solution of 1 part meat tenderizer to 4 parts water. Papain is the enzyme in meat tenderizer that will break down the protein of the bee venom, which causes the pain and the itching. Leave this on for no more than 30 minutes.

You can also try antiperspirant; the aluminum chlorohydrate reduces the effects of the bee venom, but is not as effect.

Applying cold by using ice or cool water for 10 to 30 minutes after the sting blunts the body’s allergic response.

Placing a raw onion on the sting will draw the poison from the wound, helping you get relief easily

Benadryl or any other antihistamine taken by mouth can give some added relief, and help prevent the reaction from spreading.

Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone creams can have a similar effect. As will as making a paste made of baking soda and water, leave on for 10 to 20 minutes.

Pain relievers such as Advil or Tylenol can be administered for pain relief.

These are just some of the home remedies.

Pain and swelling are common reactions to a bee sting. You are not having an allergic reaction. After a day or so the sting will itch. Don’t scratch because it will become worse and could get infected. The swelling and itching may persist for a day or two following the bee sting. You should be over the effect of the sting in about 4 to 5 days.

If you are having an allergic reaction you will experience difficulty in breathing and swallowing, dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, nausea, cramps and vomiting, shock and headaches. Seek medical attention immediately.

If you receive multiple stings, it may be a sign of aggressive bees. Use your smoke and close the hive as quickly as possible without causing the bees any more alarm. If there is a specific reason for the aggressive behavior of the bees, it may be eliminated. Allow the bees the opportunity to calm down and they may become more manageable. Multiple stings only create more discomfort. They are not more severe to anyone even an allergic person, with the allergic person several stings is just as bad as one sting.

In September of 1963, the first issue of the Avengers comic, boasting Earth’s Mightiest Super-heroes on the cover, brought together Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Hulk, and Iron Man in an effort to defeat Loki. Seeing how well the five heroes work together, Ant-Man suggested forming a team and the others agreed. The name “Avengers” came courtesy of Wasp.

Foreshadowing the ever-revolving door that would define Avengers membership in the years to come, the line-up of Avengers changed immediately. Consumed by guilt over how much the other members feared him, Hulk left the team and Ant-Man underwent the first of several name changes and began calling himself Giant-Man.

While trying to find Hulk and get him to rejoin the team, the Avengers discovered the frozen body of Captain America. Long believed to be dead since the end of World War II, Captain instead had been frozen. After Captain America joined the team, the classic line-up of the Avengers was complete and that group went on to fight the Masters of Evil, Kang the Conqueror, Wonder Man, Count Nefaria and other villains together.

Soon the Avengers underwent another personnel change, as all the members but Captain America quit and were replaced by Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, all former villains. Eventually, that line-up is joined by Henry Pym, the Wasp, Hercules, the Black Knight, the Black Panther, Vision, and the Black Widow.

Several important storylines took place in the 1970s. The first disbanding of the team took place during that decade, as Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man were replaced by Skrulls who used their positions to disband the team. The debut of the Scarlet Witch-Vision love story occurred during this time period as well, and that story would prove to be of vital importance.

One of the more controversial elements of the 1970s Avengers storylines came courtesy of Henry Peter Gyrich . As the Avengers’ liaison to the United States National Security Council, Gyrich became a frequent pain for the Avengers. One of his demands was that the team be trimmed down to seven members and that Falcon be admitted as a member in order to be compliant with Affirmative Action laws. This caused Hawkeye to lose his position in the team to Falcon for a time, until Falcon quit the team.

The 1980s saw an expansion of Avengers membership, to include Mockingbird, She-Hulk, Tigra, and Namor. It was also during this period that a new team called the West Coast Avengers premiered.

Writer John Byrne established that the children of the Scarlet Witch and Vision were illusions. That realization drove Scarlet Witch insane for a time, though she would temporarily recover.

Years later, however, Brian Michael Bendis took the Scarlet Witch’s insanity to a further level in the “Avengers Disassembled” storyline. Due to the insanity brought on by the loss of her children, the Scarlet Witch began a series of attacks on the team. While the Scarlet Witch were ultimately stopped, Ant-Man and Hawkeye were killed and the mansion destroyed. The Avengers decided to go their separate ways.

Soon after the Dissembled storyline, the Avengers was rebooted into the New Avengers, a comic full of heroes such as Wolverine, Luke Cage, and Spider-Man, in addition to the traditional Captain America and Iron Man. The new line-up offended many long-time Avengers fans as they saw it as not being faithful to what the Avengers had always been. Many critics called it a “Justice League clone.” Still, others were happy with the new line-up.

The next major shakeup in the Avengers occurred with the Superhero Registration Act. The Act caused the Avengers to pick either Captain America’s anti-registration side or Iron Man’s pro-registration side. Following the Civil War event, the Registration Act compliant Mighty Avengers joined the underground New Avengers in monthly publication.

Though there have undoubtedly been many changes to the Marvel Comics Avengers and their line-up, the basic heart of the team remains. As the book itself states: “And there came a day, day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves untied against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born – to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Through the years, their roster has prospered, changing many times, but their glory has never been denied! Heed the call, then – for now, the Avengers Assemble!”

There are some people who are allergic to insect stings; this means that their immune systems overreact to the venom injected by a stinging insect. The venom of stinging insects contains several chemicals which, when introduced through a sting, triggers the release of histamine causing local tissue damage and other chemicals that cause allergic symptoms. After the first sting, the allergic person’s body produces an allergic substance called Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, which reacts with the insect venom. If he or she is stung again by an insect of the same or similar species, the insect venom interacts with the IgE antibody produced in response to the earlier sting.

The resulting tissue damage is largely responsible for the pain, swelling, redness, and itching that we experience at the site of a sting. Although most local reactions are mild and cause swelling and inflammation localized around the sting site, the area of swelling and inflammation can be quite large. For example, one may be stung on the finger, yet the swelling may progress to include the entire arm. Both of these reactions, by virtue of the fact that they are contiguous with the sting site, are considered local allergic reactions.

For a small number of people with severe venom allergy, stings may be life-threatening; insects belonging to the class Hymenoptera are capable of injecting venom into humans and animals. Severe allergic reactions to insect stings can involve many body organs and may develop rapidly. This reaction is called anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis may include itching and hives over large areas of the body, swelling in the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea or diarrhea. In severe cases, a rapid fall in blood pressure may result in shock and loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency, and may be fatal. If you or anyone else experiences any of these symptoms after an insect sting, obtain emergency medical treatment immediately. After your symptoms are treated in the emergency room, you should also obtain referral to an allergist/immunologist to learn about treatment options.

Insect-sting or insect-bite venom can be among the most dangerous allergens. Most people who are stung by bees, yellow jackets, hornets, wasps and fire ants have little to fear. At worst, these individuals may experience mild pain, swelling and itching at the site of the sting.

An individual does not suffer an allergic reaction the first time they are stung by an insect. Instead, the initial encounter leads to sensitization, in which the immune system overreacts to the insect venom and creates immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight it. These antibodies trigger an allergic reaction the next time the body encounters the insect venom.

The next time a person is stung, these antibodies cause mast cells to release chemicals such as histamine, which can cause inflammation within the body. Highly allergic individuals may experience anaphylaxis, in which fluid leaks from the bloodstream into the tissues, causing swelling and lowering blood pressure. Bronchial tissues may also swell, causing breathing difficulties.

Stinging insects found in the United States include honeybees, yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, and fire ants. While not everyone is allergic to insect venom, reactions in the skin such as mild pain, swelling, and redness may occur with an insect sting. Most sting reactions are caused by five types of insects: yellow jackets, honeybees, paper wasps, hornets and fire ants.

However, those with allergies to the venom are likely to experience more pronounced effects. A mild allergic reaction may result in nausea, greater swelling and other discomforts. At the other extreme, a rare reaction called anaphylactic shock can impair breathing and heart functions, leading to death in some victims.

Unfortunately, most people do not know that they are allergic until after they experience an allergic reaction. It is better to destroy the hive or nest of the familiar insects causing the allergy. The insects usually bite when disturbed so it is better to move away slowly as you encounter any flying stinging insect.

The worst thing to remove from our yard and home is the pest. You can get rid of pest by pest control service. There are many varieties of pest which are found at home and at yards. They are bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas, rodents, wasp, moles, ants, birds and many more. Today you will be learning about bed bugs and how to remove them from your house.

Bed bugs:

When you hear the word bed bug you imagine something dangerous and harmful pest. But these are neither poisonous nor dangerous. These are generally found on bed of both human and animal. These can live anywhere till they are successful in breeding and feeding. So it is better to have your eyes open for this kind of pest. These can come from anywhere and they can multiple in no time. The body of this pest is very small and flat which makes difficult for spotting. These can hide in your clothes or in your pocket which can multiple at your home.

Another way for the bugs to enter is from old furniture. That’s because the material of furniture is cleaned properly. They are usually active for breeding and feeding at night than in morning. They are very tricky in finding and the food they prefer is the blood. The mark left by this pest can be itchy but are not dangerous. The adult bugs are round and small but are easy to find. The best way to spot this pest is searching in sleeping places because this is the place where they feed and breed. Another way of finding whether this pest exits at your home is by checking on mattress for a dark brown spot. This spot is their fecal matter which they leave behind after their meal of blood.

They cannot survive when these are exposed to hot temperature. Generally these are not seen at high hot places like desserts. That’s because they cannot withstand high temperature. The best way to get rid is by steam cleaning. These tend to hide in even small place or cracks which makes difficult of removing. But with the help of steam cleaning you can get rid of all the bugs. Before the pest control company uses the steam cleaning, you need to throw the trash outside your house so that there are very few places for the pest to hide. Also laundry the clothes and bed linens and hang it outside on sunlight.

Another method of killing bed bugs is by spraying pyrethrums which is extracted from mums flower. These don’t kill but they unconscious the pest and cleaning this becomes a hectic job. But the steam cleaning method kills the pest and is easy to clean the mess. Now you can also spray biodegradable and eco friendly insecticide under your mattress. Or else you can buy a cover for your mattress where the pest is trapped under it. Avoid using over the counter sprays and traps as they can lead to accidental mishaps.

Nosema is the most widespread of the adult honey bee diseases. A single celled animal named Nosema apis, a small, unicellular parasite specific to the honeybee, causes it. Nosema cannot exist in a laboratory culture, as with most bacteria and fungi. It will only thrive and multiply in the epithelial cells of the honey bee ventriculus which causes dysentery. Queens, drones and workers are all susceptible to Nosema. The spores of the Nosema must be ingested for the bee to be infected. The spore takes root in the midgut, where they will penetrate a midgut cell and grow by absorbing nutrients from that cell. The parasite will increase in size until it is large enough to divide in half. Each new parasite will continue to feed on the nutrients of the cell until they are depleted. In a matter of time, about 6 to 10 days, 100 new spores are formed in the infected cell. The infected cell when depleted of all the nutrients ruptures releasing all the newly formed spores into the midgut to start the process again. The damaged intestinal tissue is susceptible to secondary diseases. Dysentery is a common symptom of this disease. You will be able to spot the dysentery on the outside of the hive by the little brown spots, but the diseased bees will also defecate inside the hive. contaminating combs with millions of infectious spores. The disease is spread to other colony members through fecal matter.

Nosema having infected one bee will be spread to others in the colony. The disease lowers the life span of the bees. If you have a colony of bees infected with Nosema in late fall, come spring it is likely that most of the colony will have died off.

Nosema is a difficult disease to diganose without using laboratory equipment. Decapitating a bee and pulling out the last abdominal segments usually will remove the intestinal tract while still intact. An infected midgut will become swollen, whitish and lose its visible constrictions. However, other causes of dysentery, such as ingesting honeydew, fermented syrups, etc. can result in similar intestinal changes.

Treatment for Nosema is based on the most appropriate times to prevent comb contamination and to prevent the development of disease in bees that clean up fecal deposits from combs while they are still trying to expand the brood nest. A few bees are always infected, but the diseased late season bees are the only one of any concern. If they develop high levels of infection, they defecate on the combs in October, November, and December, and then they die. The use of fumagillin has been field tested by some beekeepers with acceptable results. When treating use the manufacturer’s instructions.

Bugs! Most of us got over liking them somewhere around the age
of 12 after the ant farm went belly up and we began to
appreciate how annoying mosquitoes, wasps and chiggers could be.
Then as adults, we learned to despise roaches, gnats and the
beetles that feast upon our gardens. But as many of you already
know, some of those pesky bugs can actually be good for the
garden. Not all beetles are bad with ground beetles doing their
part to help develop fertile soil. Honeybees are important in
the pollination process in our gardens and many of their more
fearsome cousins love to eat caterpillars and other insects that
devour the leaves of our favorite trees and shrubs. Of course,
we all love ladybugs dining out on aphids, we just have to get
over their tendency to congregate in our windowsills.

In the meantime, here’s a brief primer on good bugs and what
they do to help us out in the gardens at Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, NC, and in your garden at home: ·	Ladybug – Both the
larvae and the adult insects feed on aphids, the bane of the
rose gardener. ·	Lacewing – These diaphanous little guys look
delicate, but will devour aphids, caterpillars, mealy bugs,
leafhoppers, insect eggs and whiteflies. ·	Dragonfly and
Damselfly – Naiads (immature state) feed on mosquito larvae
while the adults will rid you of both mosquitoes and moths. ·
Hover Fly – The larvae get their start in the world by devouring
dozens of aphids in a single day. ·	Bumblebee & Honeybee – These
bees are important for pollination, especially in fruit trees
and, of course, you may be contributing to someone’s supply of
honey. ·	Braconid Wasp – While it may seem contrary to wish for
a wasp, these guys are parasites for European corn borers, leaf
mining sawflies and bark beetles. The lesser evil? ·	Ambush Bug
- If you can’t quite warm up to wasps, Ambush Bugs will rid you
of them along with bees and flies. ·	Damsel Bug – Another help
for the aphid problem as well as caterpillars. ·	Praying Mantis
- This one is a bit of a toss-up. The mantis will eat a variety
of insect pests, but it will also eat beneficial insects. ·
Ground Beetles – These largish beetles like to root around under
leaf litter or mulch dining on insect eggs and larvae.

As for inviting all these wonderful bugs into your garden, the
easiest way is to plant flowers and herbs that they like. Many
beneficial insects are fond of herbs including fennel, dill,
cilantro and caraway. You might also try yarrow, coreopsis,
geraniums and wild carrot as attractors. Members of the
sunflower family including asters, cosmos, purple coneflower and
zinnias are insect friendly, not to mention colorful additions
to your landscape. Winter cover crops like buckwheat or clover
are also favorites.

In addition, your beneficial bugs will require water and
protection. Use overhead watering to leave little puddles, or
put out a shallow dish of water that offers hydration without
drowning the insects. As for protection, ground beetles like
mulch or leaf litter, while leafy plants offer flying insects
good hiding places from birds or other predators. And the really
good news is that beneficial insects will actually appreciate it
if you miss a weed or two.

Bruce Ballard, Biltmore Estate Landscape Supervisor, has worked
in the gardens of Biltmore Estate, George Washington
Vanderbilt’s turn-of-the-century home, for more than fifteen
years. Encompassing both formal and informal designs, the 75
acres of gardens and grounds are at the heart of the nearly
8,000-acre estate. Ballard oversees the day-to-day operations of
three garden crews, responsible for approximately 100 acres of
manicured gardens and roadsides.
Article Source

Pollen is a source of protein, vitamins, mineral and some carbohydrates for honeybees. One pollen alone does not provide a bee with all the nutrients they need to stay healthy, so a variety of pollens are needed to provide them will all the nutrients they need. Without these nutrients, bees would not be able to produce the royal jelly required to feed the queen and rear brood. If the weather will not allow the bees to leave the hive for several days to collect pollen, and there is very little stored in the combs, it will be necessary the beekeeper to feed the bees a pollen substitute. At the same time the beekeeper will feed them sugar syrup.

The main ingredient used in making a pollen substitute is brewer’s yeast. The yeast can be fed to the bees dry, but the bees can better utilize the yeast when it is made into patties with the consistency of peanut butter. The yeast is often mixed with 50% sucrose syrup to moisten the patties. The patties are wrapped in wax paper or placed inside plastic bags to keep them moist. The beekeepers that use the high fructose corn syrup will mix the patties using that syrup. Other ingredients can be added to the patties that offer more nutrients than the yeast and syrup mixture alone. Beekeepers will add casein, lactalbumin or soy flour to their mixtures. If the beekeeper use the casein and lacatalbumin it is necessary for them to watch out for lactose and over two- percent sodium. When the beekeepers use soy flour, they try to get the “debittered” soy flour that has been processed and retains some lipids, and toasted to knock out enzymes that interfere with the bees’ digestion. Always make sure to check the data on the soy flour. The beekeeper will want to determine if the soy is a “high sucrose” variety or contains mostly stachyose. Stachyose is toxic to bees. Beekeepers will sometimes add a “feed yeast” like Torula to the pollen mixture to enhance the nutrients in the substitute. Most of them don’t use it because of the high cost.

Pollen substitutes do not increase brood production as well as pollen sources brought in by the bees themselves. Because of the pollen substitute brood rearing will not stop all together should the weather stay bad for a while. A beekeeper will have a fatter bee when using a pollen substitute. There are some areas where pollen is scarce in the late summer and fall. If the beekeeper feeds the bees pollen substitute for a fatter bee, a fatter bee will winter better and rear more brood the next spring than their non-fed counterparts.

Bees are not fond of pollen substitutes. It must be place directly in contact with the bees and as close to the brood as possible. As long as the bees are bringing in a trickle of pollen the substitute will be eaten. If there is no pollen being brought in, the substitute will be ignored and will spoil over time. There are some commercially formulated pollen substitutes on the market that claim the pollen substitute is so attractive to the bees that they will eat it anytime the substitute is offered. No one has investigated those claims.

Around this time of year, when temperatures drop and there is a chill in the air, we typically spend more times indoors where it’s warm and cozy. Maybe our diet changes to more stews and soups – comfort food as some like to call it.

Well, the same thing happens in the animal kingdom. Rodents and insects start to scout out warmer places to live, possibly with easier food sources. Unfortunately, this often results in unwanted house guests like squirrels in the roof, mice scurrying between the walls, or wasps in the attic.

You’ve probably noticed some of the tell tale signs in the form of mouse or rat droppings in the back of a cupboard, scratching and squeaking noises behind closed drywall, chewed wires, or little piles of sawdust from visiting wasps or termites.

The old saying, “the best defense is a good offense”, could never be more accurate than when referring to these pesky critters. Waiting until you hear or see the signs often means you are dealing with a full on infestation. These pests need to be dealt with before they become a problem by making your home an unwelcome option.

Mice can squeeze into the smallest of places along the side of pipes, in walls or behind cupboards. If they see a potential opening, even if they can’t fit through it, they will gladly expand the area by chewing around it. Prevent this by sealing gaps under and around doors and pipes with weatherstripping, and wrap coarse steel wool around pipes.

Leaving out any kind of food or debris is like ringing the rodent dinner bell, and you can be sure, this is the quickest way to attract these pests. Even wood piles make attractive shelters and should be stacked at least two feet from the house.

Check your foundation for cracks or openings as well as the fascia boards and soffits. Tree limbs should be cut back to at least six feet from the house to prevent squirrels from climbing onto the roof and chewing through any exposed soft wood or crawling between flue pipes or chimney. They are among the worst culprits for gnawing through wires and can cause a serious amount of damage before you realize you have a problem.

You’ve probably spotted the gray wasp nests hanging from rafters and other sheltered areas. Often times, they’re hidden between aluminum siding, attics and roof areas via pipes, vents or windows. Wasps quietly hibernate over the winter, but come spring, they’re attracted to light and often end up inside the house. Make sure all your attic vents have screens covering them, and any areas where they typically enter can also be sprayed by professional exterminators to prevent them from making nests.

When it comes to spiders your vacuum is your best defense. Simply keep on top of them by sucking up their webs. Try putting chestnuts in corners and on windowsills – for some reason, spiders hate them.

It is important that parents and caretakers have a first aid box and procedure book on hand, in the home, in the event of accidents, illnesses, and emergencies. Here are some natural remedies to disinfect, soothe, and prevent further swelling of bug bites and stings that should be prepared and kept in the first aid box, along with first aid procedure for removing a bee or wasp stinger.

Bug bites are often painful, terribly itchy, and can swell up to quite large. A bee or wasp sting is painful and the sooner you remove the stinger and treat the wound, the better and faster there will be relief and less swelling.

You can easily and effectively treat bug bites, bee and wasp stings and even black widow spider bites with these natural remedies.

It is important to follow first aid procedures first before applying the remedy for healing.

First Aid Treatment

DO NOT SQUEEZE THE STINGER AT ALL WHILE IT IS STILL IN THE SKIN.

1. Remove the stinger carefully and slowly. DO NOT SQUEEZE IT. Squeezing it will release further venom into the blood stream. Immediately discard the stinger in the trash.

2. Clean the wound with an antiseptic.

Natural Remedies Recipes

Plantain Leaves Natural Remedy

1. Crush plantain leaves to extract their juice.

2. Apply the juice over the wound and apply a loose band aid.

Toothpaste Home Remedy

1. Apply toothpaste to the wound and cover with a band aid.

Homeopathic Remedy #1

-Apply Apis Mallifica 30x to reduce inflammation, pain, burning and stinging. -Cover with a band aid

Homeopathic Remedy #2

-Apply Cantharis 30c for bee or wasp stings and cover with a band aid.

Homeopathic Remedy #3 – For severe allergic reactions to bee stings or black widow bites

-Apply Carbolicum Acidum, 30 c and cover with a band aid

Homeopathic Remedy #4 For itching, pain, and burning

-Apply Urtica Urens, 30c and cover with band aid.

Insect Bite Oil

-1tsp lavender essential oil (stops itching and reduces swelling) -1 tbls vegetable oil -Mix ingredients and apply to the wound. Cover with band aid. DO NOT USE THIS OIL AROUND EYE AREA

Extra strength Sting Paste

-1 tbls Echinacea root tincture – 1 tbls distilled water -1/8 tsp lavender essential oil -1 tbls Bentonite clay -Combine Echinacea, water, lavender and mix. -While stirring the clay, slowly and gradually add the mixture. -Apply this paste to the wound. It will stick to the skin. Store the paste in an air tight container to avoid it drying out. If it does dry out add a little water to bring it back to paste form. Use over a few days if need be.

Avoid Mosquito bites with this natural remedy, which acts as a mosquito repellent.

-1 tsp Lavender oil -Rosemary (seasoning from the grocery store) -Grind both together and apply to your skin.

Do you know?

* Do you know that applying sugar over a bite wound will keep it from scarring?
* Do you know a slice of raw onion on an animal bite will fight infection and draw out any poison?

Parents can prepare the above natural remedies ahead of time, store them in an air tight container and keep them in the first aid box or natural remedy cabinet so they are ready to use when bug bites or bee stings occur.

Put Nature to the test – Use natural remedies for cold and flu as apposed to over the counter. Toddler Cold Medicine – Home Remedies Cabinet
